We propose a simple dynamical model of the glass transition based on the results from a non-randomly frustrated spin model which is known to form a glassy state below a characteristic quench temperature. The model is characterized by a multi-valleyed free-energy surface which is modulated by an overall curvature. The transition associated with the vanishing of this overall curvature is reminiscent of the glass transition. In particular, the frequency-dependent response evolves from a Debye...

We review some recent results concerning gauge theories in various dimensions. In particular, we discuss RG fixed points and ``mirror'' symmetry duality in 3d N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories and a classification of non-trivial RG fixed points in 5d N=1 supersymmetric theories.

Multistep direct scattering of the ejectile proton is considered in (e,e'p) reactions in the quasi-free region as an improvement over the usual treatment of final-state interactions by means of an optical potential. The theory is applied to 40Ca(e,e'p) as a case example. Important contributions of two- and three-step processes are found at high missing energy and momentum in agreement with the experimental trend.

A set from the side-stage at the Great American H.O.R.D.E. Festival '97! So, my mics were at the main stage, but they piped the side-stage sets through to that PA. However, it wasn't as loud as a main stage act, the band couldn't hear cheers from there, and people were talking more than they would have if there was a band directly in front of them. In short, there is more audience chatter than usual. This is the best I could do without a second rig... sorry! Anybody know what the name of...

A structural phase transformation in the CuO_2 planes of YBa_2Cu_3O_x has been observed at the onset of the overdoped regime, x=6.95. We have measured as a function of x the dimpling in the CuO_2 planes by EXAFS, and the O2,3 in-phase (A_1g) mode by Raman scattering. The data show for x>6.95 anomalously large static displacements of the Cu2 atoms off the O2,3 layer, and a gap in the distribution of the O2,3 in-phase Raman shifts. We conclude the structure of overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x to be a...

Our overall audit objective was to validate the flying hour program for C-9A aeromedical evacuation aircraft based outside the continental United States. However, we limited our review to the European theater because the Air Force Audit Agency conducted an audit on the management of C-9A aircraft aeromedical evacuation operations and training in the Pacific theater. See Appendix B for a discussion of the Air Force Audit Agency report. We did not review the management control program as it...

We present simulations of the relaxation towards equilibrium of one dimensional steps and sinusoidal grooves imprinted on a surface below its roughening transition. We use a generalization of the hypercube stacking model of Forrest and Tang, that allows for temperature dependent next-nearest-neighbor interactions. For the step geometry the results at T=0 agree well with the t^(1/4) prediction of continuum theory for the spreading of the step. In the case of periodic profiles we modify the...

Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold with a free cocompact Z^k-action. Let k(t,x,y) be the heat kernel on M. We compute the asymptotics of k(t,x,y) in the limit in which t goes to infinity and d(x,y) is comparable to sqrt{t}. We show that in this limit, the heat diffusion is governed by an effective Euclidean metric on R^k coming from the Hodge inner product on H^1(M/Z^k; R).

The present work represents an attempt to understand the `rules of behavior' of observed warps in the HI disks of spiral galaxies found by Briggs (1990). In contrast with most earlier theoretical work, the present study investigates different initial value problems of a warped disk in an oblate (or prolate) halo potential, and it represents the disk warp in terms of $N$ independently tilted, self-gravitating, concentric rings. This representation gives new insight into the disk warping. A new...

The research effort emphasized system identification, decentralized control design, and their applications to smart structures and flexible pointing systems. The research effort had both theoretical and experimental ingredients. On the theoretical side, new system identification techniques for nonrational systems, which may be either minimum phase or nonminimum phase, were developed. The identification techniques complemented our efforts on theoretical modeling of systems with embedded and/or...

Two-dimensional system of the fermions with the indirect Einstein phonon-exchange attraction and added local four-fermion interaction is considered. It is shown that in such a system at resulting attraction between particles a new nonsuperconducting phase arises along with the normal and superconducting phases. In this, called "abnormal normal", or pseudogap, phase the absolute value of the order parameter is finite but its phase is a random quantity. It is important that the new...

It is proved that the moduli space of static solutions of the CP^1 model on spacetime Sigma x R, where Sigma is any compact Riemann surface, is geodesically incomplete with respect to the metric induced by the kinetic energy functional. The geodesic approximation predicts, therefore, that lumps can collapse and form singularities in finite time in these models.

We study numerically the paramagnetic phase of the spin-1/2 random transverse-field Ising chain, using a mapping to non-interacting fermions. We extend our earlier work, Phys. Rev. 53, 8486 (1996), to finite temperatures and to dynamical properties. Our results are consistent with the idea that there are ``Griffiths-McCoy'' singularities in the paramagnetic phase described by a continuously varying exponent $z(\delta)$, where $\delta$ measures the deviation from criticality. There are some...

We consider the horizon problem in a homogeneous but anisotropic universe (Bianchi type I). We show that the problem cannot be solved if (1) the matter obeys the strong energy condition with the positive energy density and (2) the Einstein equations hold. The strong energy condition is violated during cosmological inflation.

The formation process of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap is described using a master equation based on quantum kinetic theory, which can be well approximated by a description using only the condensate mode in interaction with a thermalized bath of noncondensate atoms. A rate equation of the form n = 2W(n)[(1-exp((mu_n - mu)/kT))n + 1] is derived, in which the difference between the condensate chemical potential mu_n and the bath chemical potential mu gives the essential behavior. Solutions...

Both the supersymmetric $SO(32)$ and $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic strings in ten dimensions have known strong-coupling duals. However, it has not been known whether there also exist strong-coupling duals for the non-supersymmetric heterotic strings in ten dimensions. In this paper, we construct explicit open-string duals for the circle-compactifications of several of these non-supersymmetric theories, among them the tachyon-free $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ string. Our method involves the construction of...

In the mean-field approximation, the number density \rho(r) for the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by an external potential V(r) satisfies a classical field equation called the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that quantum corrections to \rho are dominated by quantum fluctuations with wavelengths of order 1/\sqrt{\rho a}, where a is the S-wave scattering length. By expanding the equations for the Hartree-Fock approximation to second order in the gradient expansion, we...

Conductance fluctuations have been observed in macroscopic, quasi 3D PbTe wide quantum wells. A significant increase of the correlation field occurs in a temperature range from 40 mK to 1.2K. At the same time the fluctuation amplitude stays near e^2/h although the lateral sample size is two orders of magnitude larger than any typical length scale of diffusive electron transport. We interpret this behavior in terms of phasecoherent electrontransport, which takes advantage of a dramatic...

The influence of external fluctuations in phase separation processes is analysed. These fluctuations arise from random variations of an external control parameter. A linear stability analysis of the homogeneous state shows that phase separation dynamics can be induced by external noise. The spatial structure of the noise is found to have a relevant role in this phenomenon. Numerical simulations confirm these results. A comparison with order-disorder noise induced phase transitions is also made.
