during those meetings do kind of defend your view of the fcc or what you think the fcc should be doing? >> well, margaret, the idea that we should scale back the fcc and give a lot of its responsibilities to the ftc is something that the networks have been pushing for years. before i took this job there was a headline, an article in the "washington post" that said, in essence, here is how the networks intend to get the fcc. and it would be tragic if that happened. for a whole bunch of reasons. one is that a recent court decision in a case brought by at&t, at&t argued that the ftc did not have jurisdiction over common carriers and the court, the ninth circuit, went even further and said they do not have jurisdiction over common carriers which is what the statute says but also it does not have any jurisdiction over common carriers, noncommon carrier activity. never getting down is a sum weird territory here. but what that means is that there is a serious question as to what is the scope of the federal trade commission based on the decisions made by the federal court on arguments first pr

how the fcc operates and reform what the fcc is allowed to do. we need a modern regulator that focuses more on fixing fundamental problems in the marketplace and focuses less on dictating direction of technological innovation and progress. the last time congress passed meaningful laws affecting the fcc was in the mid 1990s when the internet was just in its infancy. it's clearly time for fcc reform. we've had many conversations about improving the agency, and this year presents a real opportunity to turn those conversations into solutions. given the broad interest in promoting continued growth of the internet, i'm confident that we can attract the bipartisan support needed to move legislation modernizing the fcc across the senate floor. another area where i'd like to achieve bipartisan agreement is on legislation to protect the open internet. we need clear and reasonable rules for the digital road that internet companies, broadband providers and end users can easily understand. i should say complex and ambiguous regulations that shift with the pol

many people -- fcc. many people are saying commissioner pai will be elevated. i think the world of him, and i think commissioner pai actually has an extraordinarily sensible and well-grounded perspective that suggests real balance between the needs of infrastructure and the needs of applications, but i don't think anybody would suggest that commissioner pai goes in with ideological biases for or against one side versus the other. i think it's simply a balanced perspective. >> host: craig moffett, any other names that you hearing finish that you're hearing for potential fcc commissioners, both republicans and democrats? >> guest: just the ones that have been cited in the press. people for a while talked about jeffreyizeizeen make, david porken has been added to the transition team, although i have not heard of people talk about him as a possible fcc chairman, nor do i think that's something he would probably be interested in. i've heard dave fellows' name mentioned, although not as much lately. i think that's not atypical, that you hear lots of names. i suspect
