Subject: Summer of 2009
Subject: Cool show in retrospect
All-in-all, I think Warren has done a pretty good job, but I feel his contribution has been mediocre. That being said, his Allman Bros contribution has been very solid - no hate towards Warren.
Subject: Are we on Saturn or Neptune?
Best show of the fest, IMO. Better than String Cheese the night before! And Cheese might be my favorite band. They played a great show too, had better stage production and more intense crowd energy...But I've seen String Cheese take it several notches higher. Being their first real show in 2 years, Cheese was fantastic. I loved talking to everyone at Rothbury and almost everyone said "That was my first cheese show and I had no idea. It was one of the best show's i've ever seen!" That makes me so happy. And I know that if they decide to tour again, they've really got a rejuvinated feeling about them right now. I believe the dead played a better set musically, but SCI gets more love because so many people in the crowd knew so much about the dead music, and very little about what SCI can do with a great crowd and with Peak Experience...
If you weren't blown away by this show, it likely has a lot to do with drums>Space...It was a show highlight!...If you weren't in outerspace during space, then i'm sorry you can't hang with the weirdness. Some people don't get it. This is 2009 and this is NOT the GD. If you are attached to Jerry, (and I love him like I love my parents) then you won't ever get it. Warren, John, Kimock, Jackie Green, Jimmy Herring, Larry Campbell are not trying to channel Jerry. You cannot channel a channel. They are simply taping into that same sacred divine source that Jerry tapped into so easily.
Warren and Chimenti were on fire the whole night. Any time you get Eyes>Estimated in the 2 and 3 slots, you know it's gonna be a long long crazy crazy night. Anyone catch the china cat>Lazy river tease back and forth back and forth just before china cat?
Sometimes post space, they can lose their edge. Quite the opposite tonight. Viola, as i mentioned, Morning Dew had a special moment for me, with the stars aligning to make a triangle...Throwin stones was one of the best i've ever heard, from any era! It was played just so damn funky...Sunshine daydream to close the set, after sugar mag opener? I totally forgot that they never finished it! WOW...And Not Fade Away might be my personal highlight... it was really just one of those special moments..Musically and lyrically.. What is real will not fade away. In many respects, they're talking about themselves, and the loving crowd energy.. The spirit of the music continues to make it's mark, even 15 years after Jerry has passed. Who would have thunk it? Should we really be that surprised. Something so beautiful, angelic, and Divine surrounds this music and those who play it. You know our love will not fade away.

I wish people would not be so critical of Warren. We forget that the words to "Jerry songs" were mostly Hunter's.
As for the second set, Viola Lee Blues was crazy!! I loved the chaoticness and aggressiveness of it. They jammed out really hard on Throwing Stones, and you definitely can't beat the U.S. Blues/Fireworks/NFA finale. An amazing experience I won't soon forget.

I made CD covers from pics I took - but I divided up the tracks a little differently than suggested by the taper. You can download my covers here if you want:
Mucho Gracias to the Dead and the Taper. I will not forget that feeling and I'll try to do something good with it.

Thanks tapers for your dedication to keeping the songs in the air for the shows we can't always make it to.

While I was pretty spaced during the set I knew what was going down setlist wise. This is the best 2009 Dead setlist by far IMO. I was at a MSG and IZod. I felt MSG was an amazing show w/ energy that will not be beat. After re-listening (and for the first time really listening) I realize this is an amazing show and I was privileged to be in attendance. The crowd could have given the band a bit more to take things to another level. Some flubs but nothing too major. Nice long show. Diverse set. No complaints here. I'll enjoy re-living this one day in and day out.
Subject: AWESOME show (but a couple mean reviewers...)
IT WAS A GREAT SHOW!
and a crazy show at that, one for the books for sure, you'll never see one anything like that again. Some of the best musical jelling I've ever heard. A very full and well-rounded sound coming from one of the best bands of all time, no matter the lineup. Crazy place, packed setlist, weird crowd (due to the fact that grateful fest was going on that same weekend, as were a lot of rainbow gatherings all over the place, so we were missing a lot of good family that we normally have at dead shows, and the fact that rothbury draws a bit of a younger audience) Some of the best musical moments I've ever heard. also a couple blatantly horrible mistakes from one or two of boys in really easy important parts, phil leaves stage for 5 minutes, there's a 28-minute drums, a lot of "ending/death" themes weaving through the setlist, just a really weird evening with the dead.
Phil and Bill still tear it up, mickey and bobby have definitely gotten pretty rusty but still do a hell of a good job, warren did really really well during this show (and i'm even one of those people who thinks that warren wasn't the right guy for the job), and holy crap, jeff chimenti is a phantom GENIUS on the keyboards and easily had the best chops of any musician on stage.
A blessing to have been able to see, especially since it's possible that I might not get to see them again.
I wonder what phil's gonna do now...:)

Subject: Really over rated?????
Anyway; Rothbury was amazing! And the fireworks at the Dead were unreal. They truly know how to organize a festival. I never saw Jerry, but The Dead has blown my mind just as much. Warren definitely rocks and the band looks like they were having a blast that magical evening. Sound quality is pretty good too. DOWNLOAD NOW!!!

Subject: Best show of the run!!!!
Phil ran off the stage for a little bit before Friend of the Devil and then came back out after a few minutes and I got a little worried but he was all good cause he came back bass bombing the crowd like crazy.
Jeff's keys during eyes are epic. I was 3rd row in the crowd right in fron of Bobby and had a great vioew of Jeff's hand's going crazy.
Highlight for me, Estimated Prophet. Had been calling it out all weekend and was so happy I got it. Thank you guys.
