Subject: Last few miles
The last show of the 4-night run co-headlining with Miles Davis. Interestingly, they played again a few days later at nearby Winterland (there were 31 Bay Area shows in '70). This would have been the perfect time to see the Davis Quintet. The Dead played one lengthy set, about 2hrs with the missing Bid You encore. A typical show from the era (gphishmon already said it best). The May shows are a step above the April shows. The AUD portion is brilliant for '70 - you can hear Phil.
Schoolgirl has a nice section ~12:00. The next couple are rote run-throughs. China gets a little sideways, but a highly spirited Rider more than makes up for it. It does sound like they go into High Time while finishing, but it equally sounds like a tape-over artifact. Either way, the beginning of Good Lovin' is cut - a middling version, way uptempo (even at the correct pitch). The jam coming out of Drums is a high point - especially Phil. Candyman is still the new tune; probably the 5th one. See the next show for a better example of this arrangement (or 5/2). But see 5/14 for the same in Deep Elem. The next couple pick up the zap, though Dire Wolf is a bit out of tune (which Bobby announces - into his mic). My opinion of this Dancin' in the Streets has improved. If not the absolute best from the period, it's fully interesting. Some hear a Tighten Up jam early on, but Dancin' is already two similar chords (so not a real Tighten, as in a Dark Star). There is, however, a pre-Mind Left Body jam that Phil plays @9:00. The way they come out of the jam is nice, but between 5:00>6:30 Jer really lights the fuck up and this section makes it a must-hear. In Black Peter Pigpen's organ sounds like a '70s soap opera going to commercial, but it's a fairly dramatic version, if awfully spare. The rest is a wash, with some sour harmonies in Uncle John's, a bland Man's World, and a Viola Lee that starts downtempo. This pace gives Jer a lot of room, but he doesn't really go anywhere, resting on trad figures.
Overall = 2½ stars

this tape contains a more prominent mix of the organ than almost ALL tapes of the era. You can follow the organ on Dancin' past the opening riff, etc He is also more prominent in 'Poor peter' compared to most versions and is much louder in Viola Lee than the portchester version from 3/70 and harpur 5/2/70. Another good viola lee example of GD speed metal from approx 11 minute mark until 12:20. ahhh...if only we had a good recording of viola lee from the F east in 7/70.....

Uncle John's=Not longest version but sweet,
great harmony especially at end.
Man's World= Pigpen /great harmonies by the rest of band.(Pigpen from SCHOOLGIRL opener-on!!!)
Viola= They have a nice groove going on a song they would pull from rotation by the summer of 70.
This one very good with a dose of Feedback to end!

And in that light, yeah, Schoolgirl does sound kind of silly in that context, but the boys really make the set their own and do a great job with Good Lovin', Dancin' (wow!!), et al - really, the back third of this show, from Dancin' on, is defintie five-star material.

8:27 - Pigpen contributes some fine organ
8:53 - noodle riff leads you off to the stars
I know some people prefer the 5/2 Dancin' because it almost sounds like a Dark Star. Well I think that is great, but it does just that: sounds like a Dark Star jam. I think this Dancin jam is much more true to the original melody while blasting off into some interesting territory.
This may not be the best show all the way through, but the Dancin' is hard to beat.

After listening to the whole show, I will agree it is not the best of 1970 (that china>rider is pretty weak), but there are some great moments. And while I will not argue with anyone who says the 5/2/70 Dancin' is better (definitely makes a case for best ever) I still say this one is on par - Garica creates almost a "beat" with his guitar (well really he's playing off the rhythm section but that's just what it sounds like to me) in places that I have never heard before - really interesting stuff. Portions really have that Dark Star feel to them too, know what i mean? And as for Phil and the rest, well they are CERTAINLY doing their thing here...great stuff

This review is only for that song, since i have not heard the whole show yet, but what a version! garcia's bouncy groove makes me want to get up and dance in the street! agree w/ phleshy that this is easily a peer of 5/2/70, but let us not forget 5/6, 2/13, and 11/18 as standout versions also. gonna have to listen to the rest of this...

An interesting set list and there is certainly plenty of fine jamming taking place, particularly during the energetic Dancin' in the Streets, which is extremely well jammed and every bit as good as the performance of that song in Binghampton on 5/2/70! (98 pts)
Subject: Run of the mill 1970
Schoolgirl, Uncle John's, and Man's World are pretty solid, but the rest of the show hasn't got much interesting, and the China>Rider transition is sloppy as heck - they're playing in two different keys. The sound quality is excellent, a quick patch notwithstanding.

as the Dead's set from that same night(including an awesome acoustic set in between both electric sets). The Boys were truely inspired by Miles that night with an out-of-this-world version
of the Dark Star--St. Stephen--Not Fade Away--Lovelight suite. the last minute as well as the
the entire Lovelight is available @ Archives.org
but the rest of the show has gone missing all these years. If anybody has The Dead's set or Miles or both you will bring a long search to

I had downloaded this show quite a while ago. I wanted to wait for the anniversary to write my review. I have downloaded over 350 shows, only bumped my gums on a couple hundred as of today...When I downloaded this show I didn't know if it was okay or not...so now I tell everyone how I do it...I learned to share my knowledge of getting something for nothing from a book I read back in 73 called STEAL THIS BOOK by Abbey Hoffman...what a freak.
I love Pigpen, and this is a "MUST HAVE SHOW" for all us Pigpen fans.....ALLIGATOR!!!!
"This Is a Man's World" is how Pigpen sang it. The GRATEFUL DEAD arranged this song in a fast 6/8. Huge Blues influence from Pigpen, the SOUL of the Band. God Bless Pigpen. We all still miss him. A real treat to have this performance to cherish from now on...it means a lot to hear him do his stuff.

i wonder what miles' thought of this gig....think he knew "viola lee blues" before these marin boys tore it up at the fillmore? i would guess not...sounded nice on the headphones....but just like the best sounding dicks picks, these tunes will just vaporize in the ether if not given the right listening envirnoment.....like in a truck with the windows open on the highway...you just aint gonna hear this......

Set's sweet if for nothing else than the Deep Elem version like no other. Jerr's feeling the blues. Boyz sound understandably tired and ready to get off stage for their recharge. But their axes are on fire at times.
SB quality is good - 16 track, baaaaby! Love it. Viola's all sexy and crisp tonight - very strong, agreed. 5ish stars - maybe a 4 -- but whose countin.

As far as I'm concerned, and contrary to another opinion expressed here, this was the mother of all Viola Lee's. I swore I saw electricity crackling out of the guitars. When I first heard ths recording I realized that it wasn't my acid-vivid imagination. It's that good. Lot's of other highlights including Dancin' and It's a Man's, Man's World.
Phil says he was in awe of what Miles was doing during this run, but y'know, I didn't end up going to see Miles 70+ times.

The Viola Lee is real laid back, which is not what I look for in my VLB's. The Dancin is pretty sweet with Jerry winding it up and down in a 7+ minute jam. Tell me this isn't a Mind Left Body with a different cadence around the 9 minute mark.....
Bobby is pretty much lost in the mix, until the organ dies down. A few barely audible digiskips in Dancin. Sound quality is good.
