for malaysia airlines flight 370 ends leaving families forever searching for answers. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the substituted yo 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the search for malaysia airlines flight mh-370 was shut down. in a joint statement center by the three countries involved in the search, malaysia, china and australia officials said in part, despite every effort using the best science available, a search has not been able to locate the aircraft. flight 370 vanished on route to kuala lumpur to beijing. there were 239 passengers and crew on board. no remains were found. you and the search area over 46,000 squareil

senate confirmation hearings resume today for more of president-elect donald trump cabinet nominees. this as more than 30 members of congress now say they'll skip trump's inauguration friday amid an ongoing feud between the president-elect and democratic congressman tom moore. >> reporter: just days before the inauguration president-elect donald trump rift with john lewis is far from resolved. >> to describe donald trump as our president -- we would welcome that as well. >> reporter: tensions escalated after mr. trump lashed out at the civil rights hero calling his presidency legitimate. prompting many democrats to boycott friday's event. >> when you look at knowledge has changed in terms of the campaign. that's something i don't think i have to terms of

reaction to mr. trump's comments on nato and u.s. relations with russia. and cbs news will have all-day coverage of the president-elect trump's inauguration, this friday, beginning with "cbs this morning." the gunman who opened fire at a crowded beachfront resort in mexico remains on the loose. at least five people including one american were killed. the blue parrott nightclub is located at playa del carmen on mexico's yucatan peninsula. >> everybody is running out even the security guards were on the ground. i knew at that point there were shooters. my back had broken and i knew there was nothing i could do. >> a mexico official ruled out terrorism and said the shooting started when a man with a gun was stopped from entering the club. the gunman expected of

attack at an istanbul nightclub confessed to the shooting. the suspect is from uzbekistan and trained in afghanistan. he was trained late monday and according to the governor, it's clear he carried out the attack on behalf of isis. during the search for the suspect 50 people were detained. and the widow of the orlando nightclub killer will face a judge in california today. noor salman was arrested yesterday by the fbi on an obstruction of justice charge. she moved to the san francisco area after omar mateen killed 49 people at the pulse nightclub last june. sources say florida authorities suspect her of aiding and abetting the attack. turning to the weather now. a winter weather advisory is posted for parts of the upper midwest this morning. pockets of snow and freezing rain have developed from the central plains to the great lakes. this is part of i storm system that hit parts of iowa, nebraska

thick coating of ice. trees and power lines snapped and roads were too slick to drive on. in texas trying to dry out following a winter downpour that caused widespread flooding. the storm triggered tornadoes from houston to dallas. well, the last man to walk on the moon makes his final voyage. astronaut gene cernan is being remembered for his passion for solar exploration. ♪ i was strolling on the moon one day in the merry, merry month of ♪ ♪ ♪-e december ♪ may . >> cernan and harrison schmidt spent over three days on the moon's surface. it was cernan's third trip to space. 12 men have walked on the lunar surface. cernan died in a houston hospital following a long

traders paying close attention to british romney teresa may. she's going to separate out how it will separate itself from the european union. the s&p lost 2. nasdaq gained 51 points closing at a record high. today, general motors will reportedly announce $1 billion investment in the u.s. factories, creating or keeping about 1,000 jobs. the investment has been planned for months as part of a process of a clipping factory to build new models. it's unclear which models will get the money or where the jobs will be. automakers said president-elect had called out building in mexico and shipping them to the united states. american apparel has started laying out about 2400 workers in california. the move came as a

a labor of love yesterday for president obama as he welcomed the world series champions chicago cubs to the white house. it was an unforgettable moment for cubs slugger first baseman. >> i think the best part was the president talking about how sports brings people together. you know, no matter what's going on in this country, in the world. three or four hours of one any particular game can just rally some people together. and that was pretty moving for me. >> president has greeted more than four dozen championship teams during his tenure. organizers of the women's march on walk expect 200,000 people to join the demonstration this saturday.
