from 37 to the toll plaza. richmond bridge drive less than 20 min from the toll to 101 police are looking for for two burglars this morning after two homes were ransacked in the same san rafael neighborhood. the latest happened yesterday morning on egret view... near baypoint drive. police say someone was at home when a man smashed a glass door to break in. the victim hid in an upstairs bedroom... but confronted the burglar when they heard him coming upstairs. the man tried to steal a safe... but was unsuccessful and fled the scene. the first burglary happened two weeks ago at a home on the same street. police say a man ransacked several rooms and took a ring worth five-thousand dollars.

happening today... police in san francisco are stepping up security at local mosques. this comes after 6 people were killed in a mass shooting at a mosque in canada over the weekend. this is video from that attack. police say they are stepping up patrols around local mosques out of caution. and we are learning new

information about the man charged with murder in connection to that deadly shooting. 27-year-old alexandre bissonnette appeared in court yesterday. he was charged with six counts of murder. witnesses say he arrived at the city's islamic cultural center sunday night dressed in all black, with at least one weapon. he later called 9-1-1 identifying himself as the shooter. the deadly attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism. in a story you will only see on kron four... one of many people now stuck abroad as a result of the president's travel ban is a san francisco film student. payam jafari went home recently to visit family in iran... and now he says his college education is at stake. he is enrolled in his third year at academy of art university in san francisco... using an "f-one" student visa. he has been working on a movie for the past three years... and says his project is now at jeopardy because he is not allowed to return to the country.

academy of art administrators say their hands are tied. they normally try to help students with visas... but they must follow legal guidelines. payam says he is hoping he can return soon to finish his movie that requires him to be on location in san francisco. happening today... legislation that would add more sanctuary cities to california is being introduced. this is the latest effort to battle president donald trump's immigration policies. the legislation would prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. many of the state's largest cities... including san francisco... have sanctuary policies, but much of california does not. the democratic legislation will be debated in a state senate committee today. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news... parents might not want to give their kids such a hard time about cleaning their room. coming up in about 20 minutes

of a shooting near a high school in south los angeles. television news footage showed paramedics rushing a victim on a gurney into an ambulance near crenshaw high school monday morning.officer aareon jefferson says a call of shots fired came in shortly before 8 a.m. on the 5000 block of 11th avenue, where the school is located.a spokesperson for los angeles unified school referred calls to the police, because the reported occurred in the neighborhood, not on toss to weather or traffic no major hot spots. bay bridge

return by late tomorrow. periods of rain and gusty winds are expected from wednesday friday. one to two inches of rain is expected with this system. another storm will move through for monday bringing rainfall. happening right now... there is a spike in license plates being stolen from cars in san leandro and police are looking for the person responsible. kron 4's yoli aceves is live at the san leandro police department with the details. yoli. police say at least 25 license plates have been stolen from parked cars in less than a week. police are not sure why anyone would steal so many plates. some possibilities they mentioned include, selling them as novelty items or attaching them to cars used in crimes. stolen plates are reported to a nationwide database that tracks them. police cars have scanning technology that can alert officers when a stolen plate is detected. to date, police have received reports from victims on the to date, police have received reports from victims on the following streets. 700-800 block of bancroft ave. 700-800 block of bancroft ave. begier ave. glen dr. merle ct. haas ave. helen ave. victoria ct.

thanks yoli. we will check back with you the morning. it has been nearly five years since morgan hill teenager sierra lamar went missing... and the murder trial of her accused killer is now underway. 25-year-old antolin garcia torres appeared in court in san jose yesterday. the opening arguments began in front of a jury that is made up of six men and six women. prosecutor david boyd says

sierra's d-n-a was found on a rope in garcia-torres' trunk... and that directly links him to the murder. legal analyst steven clark spoke outside the courthouse yesterday about what the prosecution needs to do to convict garcia-torres. sierra lamar was 15-years- old when she disappeared in march of 2012. her body has never been found. sierra's mother, marlene lamar, is going to take the witness stand as early as today. the trial is expected to run through april. if convicted, faces the death penalty. happening today... a rally will be held in oakland opposing the confirmation of betsy devos as the new u-s secretary of education. organizers of the rally believe devos' has little knowledge about public education... they also believe the billionaire

businesswoman may have conflicts of interest. the rally is part of a series of actions taking place across the country to protest president trump's cabinet nominations. the demonstration is planned for noon at the oakland federal building plaza. the handyman accused of kidnapping and murdering a prominent real estate developer appeared in court for the first time. 38-year-old christopher ellebracht was arrested last week in connection with murdering gin lu shwe. shwe was reported missing on january 18th. ellebracht was later seen on a surviellance camera depositing a forged 10-thousand dollar check belonging shwe. that same day he was seen purchasing a shovel at a home depot in morgan hill. a relative of ellebracht helped lead them to discovering schwe's body in a shallow grave in tulare county. the autopsy showed that he had been strangled. shwe's son described hearing the details of his father's death.

ellebrach is facing charges of murder, financial elder abuse and forgery. he did not enter a plea yesterday. he is expected to do that at his next court appearance on february 23rd we are getting our first look at the man arrested in connection with a series of crimes last week in the south bay. cruz vargas is accused of holding up a bank in scotts valley. that set off a massive two day manhunt last week. you may remember... that search also forced the closure of highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. vargas is also suspected of breaking into a home and stealing a minivan. he was eventually arrested in san jose. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news... more backlash against president trump's travel ban. coming up in about 10 minutes we will show you how some of the bay area's biggest tech companies are responding. plus... a man with a cane saves a bus driver

content can be shared... and it can't include people. kids are also only allowed to comment with special lego emoji. parents must confirm their kids' accounts... and "lego life" moderators will approve each post. these features are a part of the company's effort to cut down on the bullying and harassment that often occurs in comment sections. lego has met with several groups to app adheres to child safety regulations and best practices to keep kids safe certain bad habits apparently mean you're highly intelligent. that's according to new psychological research just published today. experts say having a messy room or sleeping in might actually mean you are smarter than someone who is always clean and wakes up early. they say messy environments... such as a bedroom or desk... breaks free of tradition, and that could produce fresh insights. researchers also say pushing your snooze button might be seen as negative... but it means we are listening to our body's needs. they say

a family in benicia was evacuated and neighbors were asked to shelter in place after a hazardous materials spill. investigators say a liquid spilled on the floor of a garage on viewmont street and that liquid interacted with another substance... to form a gas cloud. firefighters say two ambulances responded as a precaution but there weren't any injuries from the spill. the boys scouts of america áwillá allow transgender children who identify as boys to enroll in scouting programs.

the organization previously held a policy that relied on the gender listed on a child's birth certificate. but now the boy scouts says they will rely on the gender that a child or parent ... lists on the application to become a scout. they say the decision was based on states and communities changing how gender is defined. kids that are bullied in school are more likely to struggle academically. a new study shows that kids bullied their entire school career have declining test scores. they also have a growing dislike of school and failing confidence in their abilities. researchers tracked several hundreds students in the u-s from kindergarten through 12th grade. they found almost a quarter of those students experience bullying through their school years. several airlines are promising full refunds to travelers caught in president trump's new travel ban. american, united and delta airlines say they are complying with the temporary order banning citizens of seven muslim-majority countries. but delta said it would also be reaching out to help travelers affected by

homeland was obviously a major part of what the president campaigned on and now he's doing exactly what he told the american people he would do. the president will always put the safety and prosperity of our country first and foremost." a bus driver in missouri is saved from an attacker by a man with a cane... rodney goldman was riding the bus in kansas city when he witnessed a man attack the bus driver. goldman acted quickly and started beating the assailant with his cane. at one point he hit the attacker so hard he broke the cane and the man finally released the bus driver. that bus driver is grateful for goldman's quick action.

a high school student in kansas is getting tons of world wide attention this morning. all after he turned a school locker into a soda vending machine. blake hawkins is the student body president and loves to build things. one day when walking back from lucnh, he looked at a locker and had an idea. he calls it the soda locker. for just 75 cents, you can get yourself a drink or two. word spread around campus and he now sells cans to students between classes.

make the announcement around 5:00 tonight. two people close to the process say the president finished interviewing potential nominees last week. it is believed, his pick is down to three judges: neil gorsuch, thomas hardiman, and william h. pryor junior. all currently sit on federal appeals courts. we talked to a u-c berkeley law professer who says regardless of who is chosen...the president will be replacing a conservative with a conservative. we will continue to follow the latest developments as we hear more about president trump's rumored picks this morning. he is going to make the announcement at 5-pm tonight. we will carry it live on the kron four evening news.

happening right now... the senate is holding a hearing to confirm senator jeff sessions as the next attorney general. this is a live look at the hearing in washington d-c. this comes after president trump fired acting attorney general sally yates yesterday, accusing her of betrayal and insubordinatio n. yates told justice department lawyers not to defend the president's executive order on immigration and refugees. longtime federal prosecutor dana boente is the acting attorney general until sessions is confirmed. california senator and ranking member of the judiciary committee applauded the action taken by sally yates... and used her as an example of why she will be voting against the nomination of sessions.

approved former texas governor rick perry as the new energy secretary. and president trump has also hired a new director of u-s immigration and customs enforcement. the president named thomas homan to the position late yesterday after firing acting ice director daniel ragsdale. the switch came just hours after president trump fired acting attorney general sally yates. homan is not new to ice...he has been with the agency for over thirty years, and was honored for deporting nearly one million undocumented immigrants in a three year span new this morning.... president trump will leave intact a 20-14 executive order that protects federal workers from anti-l-g-b-t-q discrimination. the white house released a statement earlier this morning. it says trump is, quote, "determined to protect the rights of all americans, including the l-g-b-t-q community." the directive protects people from l-g-b-t-q discrimination while working for federal contractors. and protests continue at san francisco international airport for a third straight

problems at the airports though a push alert. it's free for apple and android. this morning there is new hope for fans who want to see the raiders stay in oakland. the major financial backer of a proposed stadium in las vegas has pulled out of the deal. kron 4's will tran is live at raiders headquarters with the latest. will? once again the fate of the raiders home base is in question. today, casino mogul sheldon adelson declared he was no longer a part of the team to build a 1.9 billion dollar stadium for the raiders in las vegas.sot - he wasn't involved in it so he got upset and pulled outin a statement the casino executive says : it's clear the raiders have decided their path for moving to las vegas does not include the adelson family. so, regrettably, we will no longer be involved in any facet of the stadium discussion. adelson says the raiderspropose d a lease agreement with the las vegas stadium authority without his knowledge. now after being unaware and excluded from the proposed agreement, he wants no part of the deal whatsoever.

knowledge about public education... they also believe the billionaire businesswoman may have conflicts of interest. the rally is part of a series of actions taking place across the country to protest president trump's cabinet nominations. the demonstration is planned for noon at the oakland federal building plaza. the handyman accused of kidnapping and murdering a former cupertino school board member appeared in court for the first time. 38-year-old christopher ellebracht was arrested last week in connection with murdering gin lu shwe. shwe was reported missing on january 18th. ellebracht was later seen on a surviellance camera depositing a forged 10-thousand dollar check belonging shwe. that same day he was seen purchasing a shovel at a home depot in morgan hill. a relative of ellebracht helped lead them to discovering schwe's body in a shallow grave in tulare county. the autopsy showed that he had been strangled. shwe's son described hearing the details of his father's death.

today is the last day to sign up for health insurance under the affordable care act. last week... the department of health and human services pulled its advertising campaign promoting the end of open enrollment under an order from the trump administration. it's projected that 13-point-8 million people would sign up for coverage in 20-17. president trump and republicans in congress have said they plan to repeal the affordable care act.. and replace it former president george h-w bush is out of the hospital this morning. his spokesperson says the 92- year-old was released yesterday in houston. he was admitted more than two weeks ago with pneumonia. former president bush spent several days in intensive care. his wife, former first lady barbara bush, was also at the same hospital for bronchitis. she was released last week after a course of antibiotics. the boys scouts of america áwillá allow transgender
