When I was in high school, I'd stay up late messing around online or coding, particularly during the summer. During those late night and early morning hours, I'd flip on the Home Shopping Club to have some constant chatter in the background or, as on this early Monday morning at 2am in June of 1992, I turned on the radio. For whatever reason that night, I was inspired to call into Philly talk station 96.5 FM WWDB and discuss not the politics of the burgeoning election season (thank goodness),...

90 minutes of Primo in the mix on Radio 1. No talking just tunes and a lot of his own productions as he was on something of a roll at the time - Jay Z, MOP, Rakim, All City and Krumbsnatcha all feature. Thanks to Tobes for providing the tape of this one. - DJ Step One

Prime cuts of the Scratch Perverts mixing on Westwood's Radio 1 Rap Show back in June 98. The selection is mainly classics and the indie joints of the day. As you'd expect theres some sick cuts and juggles as well. Prime Cuts is followed by First Rate and Mr. Thing. The set closes out with  Harry Love  when he was rolling with the Scratch Perverts and going under the name DJ Elmo. Its a nice mix of the indie gems and underground bangers of the time. If you've heard him DJ before then you're...

This is the only recording I have of Krush Radio, a show that aired on WIBF, 103.9 FM in Philly. It was hosted by Mike Elliot, who also hosted Krush Video, a local hip-hop video show. With Philly radio legend Lady B, he also started  Strictly Hip Hop , reportedly the first national hip-hop magazine. Though the stuff on here is occasionally a little more mainstream than what you’d hear on WPRB's Club Krush, there are still some good tracks for fans of late 80s/early 90s hip-hop. Runs...

Bit of a significant show this as Big L's death 4 days earlier is announced at the start. Rob Swift is in the house promoting his album The Ablist with his MC Gudtyme... ...and then there's a tribute to Big L with Max Glazer mixing up some of his best tracks. You also get Westwood interviewing L back in late 94/early 95 where he drops a freestyle over "Who Shot Ya." - DJ Step One

The world premier of Still DRE kicks things off here, and if you heard it at the time you'll probably remember it well as it's played 3 times back to back in it's entirety (and again in the last hour). Phife Dawg and Lootpack are in the studio for part 2. Westwood posted up the freestyle from this already if you want it straight from the DAT. And for the last part of the show there's a 2Pac tribute set for the 3rd anniversary of his death. - DJ Step One

I posted the Top 10 at 10 part of this years ago but it was only at 128kbps so here's the full 90 mins of that tape in better quality. Mobb Deep were in between albums and Prodigy still managed to be on 3 songs in the Top 10. Salaam Remi was on fire around that time too, with production on the Greg Nice and Fugees tracks (one an obscure indie 12", the other the lead single for The Score) and his dope remix of Fast Life for G Rap and Nas. Liking that Clark Kent remix of The Natural too......

As well as the LL and Canibus remixes, there's loads of good stuff on here - Gang Starr, Pete Rock, Redman, Blackstar, Method Man, Cappadonna and more. Also, a KRS ONE freestyle off his Hot 97 show with Kris going off over some beats by Marley and Pete Rock. Bit of an oddity this one as I can't say I'd ever heard of Rhythm FM (which aired out of Brighton). I got the original tape from Grime & Lime.  Having hit up Mr Thing on twitter he mentioned that TRC was the graf crew that First Rate (one of the 3 DJs on this show) was down with. I've had this on the hard drive for a while after Mat sent it to me a few years back. It was labelled as a Scratch Perverts mix but the intro makes it clear its Mr Thing on the set, although maybe another SP member joins in later. There's a couple of occasions on this mix where Thing does his 'switch into a track that references/samples the one that's playing' trick. On this occasion it's The Biznizz into Resurrection and Shadowboxing into You Know My Steez. Neither of these trump my personal...

A rare tape from after 1992 that I actually labeled with the date, this show features some nice remixes and semi-rare tunes as well as a series of good airbreaks with a very opinionated G. Groovy Productions was in the house. Unfortunately, I was a little cut happy on this episode to try and save tape, but there’s still a lot of good stuff left. Side A Intro airbreak (“KRS never dissed Trenton”, funny commentary on BDP’s “Sex & Violence” cover art) Drug Dealer… Boogie Down...

New York Rap Exchange from December '94 and the last show before Westwood bounced to Radio 1. Shook Ones part 2 is on it's way to ubiquity at this point, and Group Home's 'Supastar' isn't far behind. This tape is the one that put me on to 'Spread It' by Kamakaze and Rayvon's 'Pretty' and also includes the remix of 'What Can I Do' which might be the last great Ice Cube track. Also digging Pretty Ricky & Boo Ski's "It's Mine" (obviously, an answer record to T La Rock's "It's Yours"). Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop.

In the early 1990s I was active on GEnie (think Prodigy or AOL, but text-based) and one of the folks I met on there was Scott Zimmerman. Scott was a couple of years older and had a radio show in San Francisco, so of course I bugged him to play one of my horrible songs on his show. He obliged. He played my track alongside one by Loud Sugar, a group whose album I later hunted down on tape for a buck or so. Here's the tape he made for me. Pardon my terrible track -- I was only 16.

Max & Dave's Kiss FM Rap Show from September 1994. Starts off with that week's Top 20 which included Black Moon, OC, Biggie and Gravediggaz and then into a few new releases from Keith Murray and Lords Of The Underground... If you're wondering why "Dre Day" is on a chart from 1994 when it came out in 92, it's down to the 90s trend of UK record labels consistently fucking up the releases of Hip Hop singles. Even certified US hits like "OPP," "Jump Around," and...

This was a bit of a big deal at the time. Previously the Rap Exchange shows had given us 2 hours a month of Flex's show in NYC but this time he'd come to the UK to (relentlessly) promote his first 60 Minutes Of Funk mixtape and play at Club UN for the 1st anniversary of Tim's Radio 1 show, which started in December 94. What we got was two 3 hour shows of Flex mixing interspersed with Akinyele and Sadat X freestyles as they'd accompanied him on the trip, having featured on the mixtape's lead...

Since I launched my site way back in 2007, the tagline has been "archiving old cassettes before they snap." Guess what happened while digitizing this tape? This is a recording off of WRTI in Philly (aka "Jazz FM," at the time). Back when I was making beats, I heard a song come on the radio that I wanted to sample a bit off, so I hit record and just let the tape roll. This is that tape. A few years later, a much more talented producer and emcee heard my track and wanted to...

Side A is 45 minutes of the late DJ Swing of London's Boogie Bunch in the mix on Choice FM back in 1995. He kicks things off with some classic Juice Crew/Cold Chillin selection and then runs through some newer Hip Hop and R&B jams... On side B you get some 2Pac, Mad Skillz, Cypress Hill, Monica, SWV and more... Swing sadly passed away in 2006. There's a good write up on him here . - DJ Step One

DJ 279 has been holding it down on the radio since the early 90s. Unfortunately while Westwood was broadcasting nationally and Kiss FM covered London and the surrounding counties, picking up Choice FM was pretty much impossible if you were off the tube map. As a result, tapes of The Numberman's Friday Night Flava shows are harder to come by than those of his competition (I've been asking around for a while now). Fortunately that man Mr Lawson has come through with a show from June 1993. - DJ...

This recording is the 1st Birthday/ Anniversary celebration of Nite FM on BBC Radio Londons’ Fresh Start to the Week Hip-Hop show, presented by the legendary Dave Pearce. UK Rap star Derek B features in interview, and im unaware of any other radio interview recordings with the RUSH recording artist, so this is a bit of an exclusive [Sidenote: Apparently Derek AKA EZQ co-wrote the Anfield Rap] . Sadly, Mr Boland, who by all accounts was a thoroughly decent chap, is no longer with us. He passed...

279's Friday Nite Flavas on Choice FM from October 1994, with Black Moon and the Bootcamp Click in the studio for an interview followed by a freestyle. There's also a couple of tracks off Rampage's shelved debut album as well as stuff by Method Man, OC, Keith Murray, Bas Blasta and Lords Of The Underground ('Tic Toc' is really quite rubbish although the acapella did end up being sampled on 3 or 4 decent jungle tunes so it wasn't a complete waste of vinyl).
