This is the show with Eminem and Proof rhyming over "Hate Me Now" and Redman's "Pick It Up," with recordings of Em's crank calls in between. This is around the time The Slim Shady LP dropped so he wasn't a full on superstar at this point. I had the full 3 hour show originally and posted the freestyle session back when I first started this blog back in 2009, and again in the piece I did for Nah Right in 2014. I don't have those tapes anymore but this one - just the second...

Bobby J was a part of Funkmaster Flex's Flip Squad back in the mid-90s and he'd regularly drop guest mixes on Tim Westwood's One FM Rap Show. This mix contains alot of the big tracks from the summer of 1995 including Biggie, KRS One, Smif N Wessun and Lost Boyz. Despite rolling with Flex and releasing a handful of party break 12"s there's not much info online about the man also known as 'White Boy Roy'. Having asked around, it turns out he passed away a few years ago. RIP. - DJ Step One

Here’s a weekenders worth of Tim Westwood, from the first February weekend of 1991, yep, that’s 28 years ago! Lowlights: The first few tunes get rinsed on both nights! Both the tapes are heavily paused and needed some digital tlc to sound good. The DJ Biznizz mix got paused too. Westwood attempts to mix 2 records together [Stet/Guy] and it sounds like the horse-racing at Doncaster! Highlights: Run DMC are in interview [pre-rec, not live in the studio]: They talk about the professional...

This tape comes courtesy of Diseone. It sounds like Tim's just been sent promo copies of Cypress Hill's Black Sunday and Akinyele and Fat Joe's debut LPs as they feature heavily alongside tracks from Poor Righteous Teachers, Big Mike, The Dogg Pound and Mista Grimm (the latter two both being off the Poetic Justice OST). There's also the weekly Source Report which mentions that some white supremacists have been caught plotting attacks on Eazy E, Louis Farrakhan and Rodney King. Good to know that...

In the first two hours, there's some classic audio of Wu Tang and BDP performing live (not together, obviously) and Funky DL hosts an open mic phone in. The quality isn't great in parts but it's the best I could do. You might need to adjust your graphic equaliser and turn off the Bass Boost. Spinna passes through Westwood's show in part two. - DJ Step One

Bobby J of The Flip Squad in the mix for 60 minutes on Westwood's show back in February '95. Technically, he's not always the most on-point on the 1s & 2s but the selection is decent. This was the first tape I had 'This Is How We Do It' on which meant it was quite in demand with the ladies in the 6th Form common room, back when you had to wait for things to be in shops before you could own them. Along with Montell, you get Biggie, Capleton, Lost Boyz, Da Brat, Mary J and more, plus a few...

This ‘Fat Friday’ Radio1 Rap Show was the calm before the storm, even though Tim Westwood excitedly took to the airwaves on this Friday, the 22 August 1997. With the Flipmode DJ Scratchator [or maybe it was DJ Giz] behind the decks most of the night bringing the heat and the energy, it was the opener for a long weekend of parties and a performance the following Monday that he would later refer to as the Gig of a Lifetime . Westwood parties at Notting Hill Carnival weren’t simply a...

Having missed most of them when they aired, I'm really enjoying these New York Live shows with Westwood and Marley Marl. The guests and tunes tend to be a bit more varied than what you'd hear Flex playing on the Hot 97 Rap Exchanges. Lots going on in this one with Starang of OGC and Cormega guesting in part one, and then Deadly Venoms (an all female group that included N Tyce and who were briefly affiliated with the Wu), Screwball and DJ S&S appear in part two. All of them get together for...

This one features Jeru and Mad Lion performing at Carnival and Westwood and his crew running through a ton of rap, ragga, miami bass and R&B. Whistles and horns are in full effect and the reactions to certain tunes really let you know what was big on the street at the time, as opposed to an extensive twitter debate with William from Worcestershire who's adamant everyone was listening to Outkast and Jay Z back then and GZA and Smoothe Da Hustler was just some backpack shit. - DJ Step One

This episode of the Radio 1 Rap Show  features 18 minutes of the mythical September 1986 night at Peoples Club in Paddington, West London where Run DMC, Whodini, Hurricane and Cut Creator (and possibly even LL Cool J) performed and freestyled for 3 hours at an after party on the Raising Hell tour. Other snippets of the night have been online before and Westwood even played some of it back in his LWR days, but I don't think we'll ever get to hear the full session. I messaged DMC on twitter...

On this episode of the Capital Rap Show, a s well as the great music from that Summer night, there’s a short interview with one of the greatest Hip-Hop acts on the planet, from when they were still building beats in The Basement [ and still known as DJ Pete Rock and Corey Luv ]! There are a couple of pauses on this, but overall it’s dope. Tracks from Ice Cube, Cookie Crew and Comptons Most Wanteds’ 2nd LPs get aired. There’s a World Premiere of a Jazzy Jeff production by Monie Love, and...

Lots going on in this show, with Coolio, his DJ Wino and the 40 Thevz in the house, alongside Tommy Boy boss Tom Silverman, doing some promo for the New Jersey Drive soundtrack. This tape is one of Diablo's but I definitely had the big ass 20 minute freestyle back in the day, where Coolio and the Thevz go off for bloody ages over Craig Mack's Get Down and the Fuschnickens Breakdown instrumentals (side note: long freestyle sessions benefit hugely from multiple beat changes. Tell Black Thought...

Opening with a couple of KRS World Premieres [off cassette] and ending with a conversation featuring Flavor Unit alumni Apache and Naughty by Nature, this is a dope set of Rap & Ragga from 1993. And Cool C wasn't the only rapper with a Juice Crew Dis, keep an ear out for the original unreleased version of "Outta Here," and the lines about Mr Magic being a "motherfuckin' coke addict!" It’s a rare interview with Guru & Premier, shootin the gift on air with Tim Westwood, just hours after their incredible April 1991 gig at the Town & Country Club in North London. They rock up to the studios of Capital Radio to catch up on some promo for the forthcoming Step In The Arena LP, and they’re joined in the studio by an excitable Caveman crew. There are too many really interesting topics to mention, so just listen up at your leisure. They both give Tim major propage for...

With a heavy heart and troubling happenstance, I'm posting this notably rare interview with Andre Harrell, from almost 3 decades ago. It’s a Capital Rap Show from May 1991. The sad events of this last week have been difficult enough for anyone from the UK Rap community [Our thoughts and love go out to the entire Chijioke family and to everyone that knew TY. He was an admirable musician, a trailblazer, a funny warm-hearted guy and an all-round good soul] but to learn of the passing of one of...

Jeru in the studio with Westwood promoting his upcoming debut LP. The recording (courtesy of that man Diablo) has been pause buttoned a few times but you get a decent chunk of the interview and some proper bangers either side of it. I loved 'Sun Rises...' and probably played it as much as Illmatic when it came out. Premier on his A-game and no skippable tracks. It was one of those releases where mixtape and radio DJs were playing several tracks off it rather than just the lead single.  I know...

Here's the recording of the 1996 Carnival broadcast, which I think takes in Sunday and Monday's performances. If I recall correctly, it was broadcast on Monday evening, and the swears are edited so it's not live and direct from the Westway. Westwood and Goldfinger hold down the selection with live performances by Heltah Skeltah, Lost Boyz, Blak Twang, Foxy Brown (who had no solo records at this point but was killing every feature) and Montell Jordan. Highlights include Foxy having to back track...

Hadn't heard this October '97 edition of the Rap Exchange before I found it on a Google deep dive over the weekend. In terms of guests this is up there with the best of them and whoever ripped it - shouts to you - was good enough to leave the interviews in there (most of us seem to have hit the pause button back in the day in order to fit a 2 hour show on a C90 and get maximum tunes). The playlist is decent too: alongside the big tracks of the time by DMX and Busta, there's a Pretty Boy  Foxy...
