New York Rap Exchange from December '94 and the last show before Westwood bounced to Radio 1. Shook Ones part 2 is on it's way to ubiquity at this point, and Group Home's 'Supastar' isn't far behind. This tape is the one that put me on to 'Spread It' by Kamakaze and Rayvon's 'Pretty' and also includes the remix of 'What Can I Do' which might be the last great Ice Cube track. You also get the dope freestyle session with Scarface, KRS One and MC Serch (which has appeared on this blog a couple of...

No guests in the studio on this one, just Westwood running through all the brand new music of the day. Kind of strange that when he plays that Lox & Biggie track it has a (very) small bit of Stretch Armstrong talking over it. I know that song was hard to come by but I'm suprised Tim couldn't get an official promo from Bad Boy! Following my London Posse ( London Posse biography ) post (which proved quite popular), here's Rodney P & Bionic on Kiss FM, promoting the release of their new EP . KISS had only been a legal station for a couple of years at this point and the Wednesday night Rap show was hosted by Max LX & Dave VJ . Tracks off the EP are played during the interview and its finished off with a wicked freestyle over Lords Of The Underground's 'Funky Child' instrumental. - DJ Step One

DJ 279 has been holding it down on the radio since the early 90s. Unfortunately while Westwood was broadcasting nationally and Kiss FM covered London and the surrounding counties, picking up Choice FM was pretty much impossible if you were off the tube map. As a result, tapes of The Numberman's Friday Night Flava shows are harder to come by than those of his competition (I've been asking around for a while now). Fortunately that man Mr Lawson has come through with a show from June 1993. - DJ...

Side A is 45 minutes of the late DJ Swing of London's Boogie Bunch in the mix on Choice FM back in 1995. He kicks things off with some classic Juice Crew/Cold Chillin selection and then runs through some newer Hip Hop and R&B jams... On side B you get some 2Pac, Mad Skillz, Cypress Hill, Monica, SWV and more... Swing sadly passed away in 2006. There's a good write up on him here . - DJ Step One

This recording is the 1st Birthday/ Anniversary celebration of Nite FM on BBC Radio Londons’ Fresh Start to the Week Hip-Hop show, presented by the legendary Dave Pearce. UK Rap star Derek B features in interview, and im unaware of any other radio interview recordings with the RUSH recording artist, so this is a bit of an exclusive [Sidenote: Apparently Derek AKA EZQ co-wrote the Anfield Rap] . Max & Dave's Kiss FM Rap Show from September 1994. Starts off with that week's Top 20 which included Black Moon, OC, Biggie and Gravediggaz and then into a few new releases from Keith Murray and Lords Of The Underground... If you're wondering why "Dre Day" is on a chart from 1994 when it came out in 92, it's down to the 90s trend of UK record labels consistently fucking up the releases of Hip Hop singles. Even certified US hits like "OPP," "Jump Around," and...

This was a bit of a big deal at the time. Previously the Rap Exchange shows had given us 2 hours a month of Flex's show in NYC but this time he'd come to the UK to (relentlessly) promote his first 60 Minutes Of Funk mixtape and play at Club UN for the 1st anniversary of Tim's Radio 1 show, which started in December 94. What we got was two 3 hour shows of Flex mixing interspersed with Akinyele and Sadat X freestyles as they'd accompanied him on the trip, having featured on the mixtape's lead...

And so we have the first appearance on OB4ZL for Dave Pearce's rap show on Greater London Radio. Most people in the UK are familiar with Dave as he spent the latter part of the 90s and early 00s doing big things on the dance music side of things having moved to Radio 1 from Kiss FM. Prior to that his voice was immortalized on Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions... - that's him on the album's intro introducing them at the Hammersmith Odeon - which is quite impressive in itself, but he...

Hadn't heard this October '97 edition of the Rap Exchange before I found it on a Google deep dive over the weekend. In terms of guests this is up there with the best of them and whoever ripped it - shouts to you - was good enough to leave the interviews in there (most of us seem to have hit the pause button back in the day in order to fit a 2 hour show on a C90 and get maximum tunes). The playlist is decent too: alongside the big tracks of the time by DMX and Busta, there's a Pretty Boy  Foxy...

Jeru in the studio with Westwood promoting his upcoming debut LP. The recording (courtesy of that man Diablo) has been pause buttoned a few times but you get a decent chunk of the interview and some proper bangers either side of it. I loved 'Sun Rises...' and probably played it as much as Illmatic when it came out. Premier on his A-game and no skippable tracks. It was one of those releases where mixtape and radio DJs were playing several tracks off it rather than just the lead single.  I know...

Here’s a weekenders worth of Tim Westwood, from the first February weekend of 1991, yep, that’s 28 years ago! Lowlights: The first few tunes get rinsed on both nights! Both the tapes are heavily paused and needed some digital tlc to sound good. The DJ Biznizz mix got paused too. Westwood attempts to mix 2 records together [Stet/Guy] and it sounds like the horse-racing at Doncaster! Highlights: Run DMC are in interview [pre-rec, not live in the studio]: They talk about the professional...

Bobby J was a part of Funkmaster Flex's Flip Squad back in the mid-90s and he'd regularly drop guest mixes on Tim Westwood's One FM Rap Show. This mix contains alot of the big tracks from the summer of 1995 including Biggie, KRS One, Smif N Wessun and Lost Boyz. Despite rolling with Flex and releasing a handful of party break 12"s there's not much info online about the man also known as 'White Boy Roy'. Having asked around, it turns out he passed away a few years ago. RIP. - DJ Step One

Diablo's collection is still throwing up some great Capital Rap Show tapes. This one has the original version of 'Outta Here' with the Mr Magic dis and a few deep cuts by the likes of Strickly Roots, Trends Of Culture and Juice With Soul. Crazy to think that the likes of Sound Of Da Police, Insane In The Brain, Come Clean and 93 Til Infinity were all hitting around the same time too.

This tape comes courtesy of Diseone. It sounds like Tim's just been sent promo copies of Cypress Hill's Black Sunday and Akinyele and Fat Joe's debut LPs as they feature heavily alongside tracks from Poor Righteous Teachers, Big Mike, The Dogg Pound and Mista Grimm (the latter two both being off the Poetic Justice OST). There's also the weekly Source Report which mentions that some white supremacists have been caught plotting attacks on Eazy E, Louis Farrakhan and Rodney King. Good to know that...

This is 90 minutes of a Capital Rap Show from a Friday night in 1993. Tim drops new Big Shug, Souls Of Mischief, Funkdoobiest, Pete Nice and Fat Joe, plus there's a bit of Ron G in the mix for the last part of the b-side (although the quality on that isnt great unfortunately). - DJ Step One

Vintage Westwood now, courtesy of Tobes. This is 90 minutes of the Capital Rap Show from September 93. Snoop had just been arrested for murder and Doggystyle hadn't even hit the shelves, but Westwood debuts 'Whats My Name' as well as tunes by Scarface, Illegal, Erick Sermon, LONS, London Posse and KRS One... There's also a 3 minute Onyx promo over Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam' (or Tenor Saw's 'Ring The Alarm' if you prefer). Track List Erick Sermon ft Keith Murray & Redman - Swing It Over Here...
