Philadelphia’s Q102 was Power 99’s main competition during the early 90s in the urban contemporary market. While Power 99 tried to distance itself from hip-hop during that time with their infamous “No Rap Workday,” Q102 embraced hip-hop a little more fully. Don’t get me wrong – they still played their fair share of crappy R&B, but at least they had a show featuring Zulu the One Man Gang (now known as  Zxulu ) and  Jay-Ski , the Maestro of Funk. The show was titled “The Q102...

(originally posted at http://www.normalbias.org/2008/12/03/dj-mike-2600-cmon-man-cant-you-just-play-some-hip-hop/ ) Here’s a great mix I picked up online six years ago.   DJ Mike 2600   (aka DJ Mike the 2600 King) of the Litterthugz dropped this gem back in 2001 and manages to mix Hall & Oates with MC Shan and a computerized voice reciting Flavor Flav lyrics. It’s pretty bonkers and needs to be checked out. What’s even cooler about this tape is that it appears each cassette was...

(this live date comes via IrishCraig @ RandomRapRadio.com ; see also his 2019 interview with Mad Skillz ) From a jam at Subterania in London from 7 March 1996, this tape is a promo item, as opposed to the DJ 279, Choice FM radio broadcast of the show. It’s a live set from arguably the finest freestyle MC of the 90s, maybe to this day. Mainly cos he is funny, and bringin humour to a stage or radio show was a skill not many could pull of during the period. Brixtons’ finest Fallacy makes an...

Also digging Pretty Ricky & Boo Ski's "It's Mine" (obviously, an answer record to T La Rock's "It's Yours"). New York Rap Exchange from December '94 and the last show before Westwood bounced to Radio 1. Shook Ones part 2 is on it's way to ubiquity at this point, and Group Home's 'Supastar' isn't far behind. This tape is the one that put me on to 'Spread It' by Kamakaze and Rayvon's 'Pretty' and also includes the remix of 'What Can I Do' which might be the last great Ice Cube track. Side A is 45 minutes of the late DJ Swing of London's Boogie Bunch in the mix on Choice FM back in 1995. He kicks things off with some classic Juice Crew/Cold Chillin selection and then runs through some newer Hip Hop and R&B jams... On side B you get some 2Pac, Mad Skillz, Cypress Hill, Monica, SWV and more... Swing sadly passed away in 2006. There's a good write up on him here . - DJ Step One

This recording is the 1st Birthday/ Anniversary celebration of Nite FM on BBC Radio Londons’ Fresh Start to the Week Hip-Hop show, presented by the legendary Dave Pearce. UK Rap star Derek B features in interview, and im unaware of any other radio interview recordings with the RUSH recording artist, so this is a bit of an exclusive [Sidenote: Apparently Derek AKA EZQ co-wrote the Anfield Rap] . DJ 279 has been holding it down on the radio since the early 90s. Unfortunately while Westwood was broadcasting nationally and Kiss FM covered London and the surrounding counties, picking up Choice FM was pretty much impossible if you were off the tube map. As a result, tapes of The Numberman's Friday Night Flava shows are harder to come by than those of his competition (I've been asking around for a while now). Fortunately that man Mr Lawson has come through with a show from June 1993. - DJ...

As you may remember,  Big Tim got shot back in '99 *. The full story behind it was never made public but general consensus seems to be that some gangster types wanted to do some business with him (promoting a show, running security or whatever) and didn't react well when he refused. As a result he couldn't present his show the following weekend so Funkmaster Flex steps up and covers for 3 hours, albeit with no talking just music. The voice you hear before the show starts is Pete Tong, who...

This was a bit of a big deal at the time. Previously the Rap Exchange shows had given us 2 hours a month of Flex's show in NYC but this time he'd come to the UK to (relentlessly) promote his first 60 Minutes Of Funk mixtape and play at Club UN for the 1st anniversary of Tim's Radio 1 show, which started in December 94. What we got was two 3 hour shows of Flex mixing interspersed with Akinyele and Sadat X freestyles as they'd accompanied him on the trip, having featured on the mixtape's lead...

Max & Dave's Kiss FM Rap Show from September 1994. Starts off with that week's Top 20 which included Black Moon, OC, Biggie and Gravediggaz and then into a few new releases from Keith Murray and Lords Of The Underground... If you're wondering why "Dre Day" is on a chart from 1994 when it came out in 92, it's down to the 90s trend of UK record labels consistently fucking up the releases of Hip Hop singles. Even certified US hits like "OPP," "Jump Around," and...

It's pretty much always audio around these parts, but today I wanted to share an old newsletter from the archives. Thompson, founding member of Timex Social Club. There's also an insert ad for the world's first hip-hop database, featuring a list of "over 4000 phrases of more than 75 groups [...] to assist DJ's,...

Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number (in this case, it was also labeled "Breakin' Stuff, Boogaloo Stuff"). This one is number 15 in that set and features electro and mid-80s hip-hop and was recorded on a Memorex MRX 3 Oxide tape. Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop and electro.

Interesting one this. Guru being interviewed over the phone on a small community station out in Tuscon, Arizona . "You Know My Steez" had just come out and Moment Of Truth was being finished up for release in March '98. He mentions that they were trying to get Busta Rhymes on the remix for Steez but ended up going with Kurupt (probably for the better imo). He also offers up an acapella rhyme but unfortunately the dude in the studio leaves a beat playing so it ends up sounding a bit...

Here is one of the early entries in Jay-Ski’s mixtape series. Volume 9 comes from 1995 and has plenty of patented Jay-Ski cuts, remixes, and a slew of local MCs you’ve probably never heard before (except maybe for WPRB regular Zulu–now Zxulu–The One Man Gang). My copy is a dub (oops, sorry, Jay), but the rip is still pretty decent quality. My favorite cut on here is the super-long Jersey-centric posse cut, "Session Numba Nine." Maybe Jay can chime in with the full MC line-up....

And so we have the first appearance on OB4ZL for Dave Pearce's rap show on Greater London Radio. Most people in the UK are familiar with Dave as he spent the latter part of the 90s and early 00s doing big things on the dance music side of things having moved to Radio 1 from Kiss FM. Prior to that his voice was immortalized on Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions... - that's him on the album's intro introducing them at the Hammersmith Odeon - which is quite impressive in itself, but he...

The tracklist for this isn't entirely dissimilar to this one posted earlier so it's fair to say it's from the week before or after. Decided to post it up anyway because Tim goes into the Capital Rap Show archives not once but twice and pulls out an old Cash Money & Marvelous session and a freestyle by Chill Rob G, Queen Latifah and the Jungle Brothers, both of which I assume are from the late 80s or possibly 1990 in the case of the latter ( which I posted on its own years ago ). There's...
