Some serious deep '89 cuts on this episode of DNA & Hank Love, which also features a visit from the Media Assassin Harry Allen with "Knowledge to Live By." The episode is dedicated to Rev. Al Sharpton. Interesting ad for "It's a Shame" by Bob And The Mob feat. DJ Slayer & MC Speedo. Uses the same samples as Monie Love's version which, of course, made a much bigger splash. "Real Deal" continues previous week's discussion. Track List ? I Got It Made......

This episode of the DNA & Hank Love show on JAM 105.9 comes from July 1989. Fresh off his win at the 1989 New Music Seminar, Freshco does a brief interview and takes calls, including one that is basically the '89 version of a Twitter troll. Freshco notes that he just hosted an episode of Yo! MTV Raps and that the following week they'd be airing video of his victory. He also notes that "I beat everyone I won against." Later on, DJ Polo rolls through. Track Listing God Made Me...

This recording is the 1st Birthday/ Anniversary celebration of Nite FM on BBC Radio Londons’ Fresh Start to the Week Hip-Hop show, presented by the legendary Dave Pearce. UK Rap star Derek B features in interview, and im unaware of any other radio interview recordings with the RUSH recording artist, so this is a bit of an exclusive [Sidenote: Apparently Derek AKA EZQ co-wrote the Anfield Rap] . Sadly, Mr Boland, who by all accounts was a thoroughly decent chap, is no longer with us. He passed...

Lots going on in this show, with Coolio, his DJ Wino and the 40 Thevz in the house, alongside Tommy Boy boss Tom Silverman, doing some promo for the New Jersey Drive soundtrack. This tape is one of Diablo's but I definitely had the big ass 20 minute freestyle back in the day, where Coolio and the Thevz go off for bloody ages over Craig Mack's Get Down and the Fuschnickens Breakdown instrumentals (side note: long freestyle sessions benefit hugely from multiple beat changes. Tell Black Thought...

This is a full 3 Hour DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk show from one of the legendary Saturday night mastermixes on 98.7 Kiss FM. It’s one of the most iconic DJs and shows in the ancestry of Hip-Hop and Rap on the airwaves, Kool DJ Red Alert. When the pioneers talk about the golden area of Rap on the radio, Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert are arguably the first names on peoples lips. Along with co-presenters Diane King and Jeff Foxx, take yourself back to April 1989. On a nostalgic aural trip back to...

Here's the twelfth and final episode in the Trancelike State series ( others ), my electronica mix show from college. Tracklist after the jump. (As a reminder to explain my goofy show titling/dating convention: the episode number of 049703 can be translated pretty simply: April 1997, fourth mix of the month. The “star date” was just my stupid way of designating specifically when the mix was done by writing the date backwards (so 79.42.40 is April 24, 1997). The 9th through 12th episodes...

As is common on college radio, we occasionally ran a skimmer. A skimmer would record airbreaks anytime the DJs would turn their mics on. The idea was that station management would listen for profanity, extraneous talking, etc. Truth is, we never really did. And annoyingly, DJs (including me) would sometimes leave their mic on while playing music, filling up the tape way too quickly with music. A few years ago I posted what I thought was the only skimmer tape from WMWC , but I was surprised to...

It’s a live set from arguably the finest freestyle MC of the 90s, maybe to this day. Mainly cos he is funny, and bringin humour to a stage or radio show was a skill not many could pull of during the period. Brixtons’ finest Fallacy makes an...

The outrageously funny Doctor Dré was a co-presenter on YO! MTV Raps alongside his comedic cohort Ed Lover, he did a similar co-hosting role on the HOT97 Morning Show during the 90’s on WQHT. He was also the ‘Fearless Leader’ of Def Jam Recording artists Original Concept, but this recording is him in his earliest radio persona, back in 1985. He gleefully presents this snapshot of 1985 Long Island sound, with a soundtrack made up of Pop Soul and more concrete vibrating Hip-Hop. There are...

The Mix Master Mike in question, and the DJ droppin skills for this notable tape, is Philly icon and local legend Mike Maserati. Huge shouts and big respect to Mike and Mimi Brown who is on the mic. Regrettably, there are a few pauses in the recording, but there’s almost an hour of truly classic Rap, and a few rare ones too. With the numerous pauses, the likelihood is that some of the recording is from Mimi [who hosted the Rap Digest] on WDAS [105.3] as well as Lady B on WUSL [98.9]....

Nice to get my hands on some 90s West Coast radio for a change. It definitely wasn't easy to come by in the UK and isn't widely shared online as far as I can tell. This was one of a couple of tapes of Power 106 in LA that Diablo hooked me up with. Mr Choc of the Beat Junkies hosts with DJ E-Man on the tables (who seems to be in the stations in-house mix DJ) and Jeru The Damaja is their guest. Akinyele is announced as being on the show as well but unfortunately doesn't appear on this recording....
