This is my ‘Wu on Flex’ tape from 1995, and one of my favourite radio shows ever, due to its spontaneous and unscripted nature. It’s a famous tape and it’s been dubbed a lot over the past 24 years, mainly cos it’s RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard, DJ’ing on HOT 97. RZA, known for producing, rhyming and acting, hits it out the park from behind the two turntables, and drops a savage breaks set that kicks off with the compelling Star Wars Imperial March. Big Baby Jesus does an impromptu...

Another Capital Rap Show segment from Spring 1991. Sadly, it’s only an hour long, but this time Tim plays new tracks from the forthcoming De La Soul is Dead LP, cuts off the Terminator X album, the Shabba Ranks & KRS collab that hadnt been released at the point, and again, the LL & EPMD demo of Rampage. Jay the Sultan was on the phone doing the Source Update explaining about, amongst other things, a rap album that was due to be released protesting the Gulf War. The war had ended in...

It’s a rare interview with Guru & Premier, shootin the gift on air with Tim Westwood, just hours after their incredible April 1991 gig at the Town & Country Club in North London. They rock up to the studios of Capital Radio to catch up on some promo for the forthcoming Step In The Arena LP, and they’re joined in the studio by an excitable Caveman crew. There are too many really interesting topics to mention, so just listen up at your leisure. They both give Tim major propage for...

This is one tape I was glad to save - it was recorded over an old bootleg BDP tape (complete with crookedly stamped ink and in-tact recording tabs) that was in rough shape. The tape was warbly and actually locked up, almost getting eaten numerous times during digitization. It required some re-recording and a little audio editing to get a clean rip. Thankfully, it's safe now, which is a good thing because this one of the last episodes of Raw Deal from 1993 (the show went off the air in March)....

Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number (in this case, it was also labeled "Breakin' Stuff, Boogaloo Stuff"). This one is number 15 in that set and features electro and mid-80s hip-hop and was recorded on a Memorex MRX 3 Oxide tape. Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop and electro.

As is common on college radio, we occasionally ran a skimmer at WMWC. A skimmer would record airbreaks anytime the DJs would turn their mics on. The idea was that station management would listen for profanity, extraneous talking, etc. Truth is, we never really did. And annoyingly, DJs (including me) would sometimes leave their mic on while playing music, filling up the tape way too quickly with music. A few years ago I posted what I thought was the only skimmer tape from WMWC , but I was...

Since I launched my site way back in 2007, the tagline has been "archiving old cassettes before they snap." Guess what happened while digitizing this tape? This is a recording off of WRTI in Philly (aka "Jazz FM," at the time). Back when I was making beats, I heard a song come on the radio that I wanted to sample a bit off, so I hit record and just let the tape roll. This is that tape. A few years later, a much more talented producer and emcee heard my track and wanted to...

This tape appears to be a late-90s conference call recorded and released as an advertisement for Tristar's "Intrasound" naturopathic healing technology. Intrasound gel and powder are discussed. Intrasound products appear to still be around, though there's not a heck of lot on the web about them. I'm guessing this was from the late 1990s, as the web site advertised on the cassette was gone by '99.

From an era when third-parties seemed like they might actually make a difference in the political discourse comes this radio interview with three-time (then, two-time) Natural Law Party presidential candidate and quantum physicist Dr. John Hagelin . The interview aired on  The Evening Talk Show on 90.1 FM, KERA (North Texas Public Broadcasting), hosted by Glenn Mitchell . It's an interesting listen as it captures a period in time where post-Perot there was some belief that third parties had a...

Some serious deep '89 cuts on this episode of DNA & Hank Love, which also features a visit from the Media Assassin Harry Allen with "Knowledge to Live By." The episode is dedicated to Rev. This episode of the DNA & Hank Love show on JAM 105.9 comes from July 1989. Fresh off his win at the 1989 New Music Seminar, Freshco does a brief interview and takes calls, including one that is basically the '89 version of a Twitter troll. Freshco notes that he just hosted an episode of Yo! MTV Raps and that the following week they'd be airing video of his victory. He also notes that "I beat everyone I won against." Lots going on in this show, with Coolio, his DJ Wino and the 40 Thevz in the house, alongside Tommy Boy boss Tom Silverman, doing some promo for the New Jersey Drive soundtrack. This tape is one of Diablo's but I definitely had the big ass 20 minute freestyle back in the day, where Coolio and the Thevz go off for bloody ages over Craig Mack's Get Down and the Fuschnickens Breakdown instrumentals (side note: long freestyle sessions benefit hugely from multiple beat changes. As is common on college radio, we occasionally ran a skimmer. A few years ago I posted what I thought was the only skimmer tape from WMWC , but I was surprised to...
