This one features Jeru and Mad Lion performing at Carnival and Westwood and his crew running through a ton of rap, ragga, miami bass and R&B. Whistles and horns are in full effect and the reactions to certain tunes really let you know what was big on the street at the time, as opposed to an extensive twitter debate with William from Worcestershire who's adamant everyone was listening to Outkast and Jay Z back then and GZA and Smoothe Da Hustler was just some backpack shit. - DJ Step One

"we just found out about somethin we don't like out here, knowumsayin, called the BNP or summ'n like that, and we ain't havin it..." Onyx pass through Westwood's show on a Friday night in 1993 having just performed on The Word ( here on youtube at 3:30 ). They mention they had a 2nd album with a planned release date for early 94 and it wasn't called All We Got Iz Us so who knows what became of that and whether it was scrapped, pushed back or they just changed the title. Freestyles were a regular part of rap radio by 1997 but this is like a Mr Bongo regular's wet dream. It's a 37-minute freestyle session on Sway & Tech's Wake Up Show from late 1997 and the line up is immense. Kool G Rap, Craig G, Juice, Shorty Wreck, Eminem, Kwest Tha Madd Lad, Thirstin Howl, Wordsworth & Mos Def and Talib Kweli all step up and do their thing. A lot of those names were new on the scene at the time so there's definitely an element of hungry MCs with something to prove...

This is the show with Eminem and Proof rhyming over "Hate Me Now" and Redman's "Pick It Up," with recordings of Em's crank calls in between. This is around the time The Slim Shady LP dropped so he wasn't a full on superstar at this point. I had the full 3 hour show originally and posted the freestyle session back when I first started this blog back in 2009, and again in the piece I did for Nah Right in 2014. I don't have those tapes anymore but this one - just the second...

Even though I didn't catch many of them at the time, I'm starting to think that Westwood's New York Live shows with Marley are better than his Rap Exchange shows with Flex. DJ S&S is on the 1210s for a bit and all the guests drop freestyles on this one, with Craig G stepping up to rhyme alongside Truck Turner and Jeru. Pete Rock and TJ Swan are also in the studio. I imagine the #bantz was in full flow. Part 1 features Truck Turner and DJ S&S and part 2 features Black Moon and Jeru. - DJ...

LONS alongside Pete Rock and CL perform on Richie Rich's Rap Academy on London's Kiss FM back in May '92. If you want a good example of how record labels handled hip hop in the UK back then, Elektra had both groups performing at different venues in town on the same night. Top work there lads. As you would expect from anything involving a young Busta Rhymes, this a lively affair with them hyping each other up and ad libbing all over the place. Classic material. - DJ Step One

This episode of the Radio 1 Rap Show  features 18 minutes of the mythical September 1986 night at Peoples Club in Paddington, West London where Run DMC, Whodini, Hurricane and Cut Creator (and possibly even LL Cool J) performed and freestyled for 3 hours at an after party on the Raising Hell tour. Other snippets of the night have been online before and Westwood even played some of it back in his LWR days, but I don't think we'll ever get to hear the full session. I messaged DMC on twitter...

Here  is a show from the North of England, specifically Manchester. The same city electronic music artists 808 State were from, they also hosted a show on Sunset in the 80s, under the Spinmasters moniker, before becoming 808. Liam Howlett from the Prodigy also presented a dance show on Sunset. Along with local legend Stu Allan and his hip-hop themed Bus Diss show on KEY103FM, Leaky Fresh and Owen D were Manchester DJs that started as The Master Jam MD’s in the early 80s. This set is partly from a 27th generation copy of an Underground Flavas tape out of West London and partly from a rip which had been shared on the web a few years back [and subsequently been deaded in terms of linkage]. We’ve bumped the EQ in Izotope, compressed it a touch and tweaked it for your listening pleasure. This show is a great example of why Stretch is held is such high esteem by his peers within the industry as well as the listeners, he may have been a DJ and a host, but the actual...

This is my ‘Wu on Flex’ tape from 1995, and one of my favourite radio shows ever, due to its spontaneous and unscripted nature. It’s a famous tape and it’s been dubbed a lot over the past 24 years, mainly cos it’s RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard, DJ’ing on HOT 97. RZA, known for producing, rhyming and acting, hits it out the park from behind the two turntables, and drops a savage breaks set that kicks off with the compelling Star Wars Imperial March. This is one tape I was glad to save - it was recorded over an old bootleg BDP tape (complete with crookedly stamped ink and in-tact recording tabs) that was in rough shape. The tape was warbly and actually locked up, almost getting eaten numerous times during digitization. It required some re-recording and a little audio editing to get a clean rip. Thankfully, it's safe now, which is a good thing because this one of the last episodes of Raw Deal from 1993 (the show went off the air in March)....

Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number (in this case, it was also labeled "Breakin' Stuff, Boogaloo Stuff"). This one is number 15 in that set and features electro and mid-80s hip-hop and was recorded on a Memorex MRX 3 Oxide tape. Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop and electro.

As is common on college radio, we occasionally ran a skimmer at WMWC. A skimmer would record airbreaks anytime the DJs would turn their mics on. The idea was that station management would listen for profanity, extraneous talking, etc. Truth is, we never really did. And annoyingly, DJs (including me) would sometimes leave their mic on while playing music, filling up the tape way too quickly with music. A few years ago I posted what I thought was the only skimmer tape from WMWC , but I was...

Since I launched my site way back in 2007, the tagline has been "archiving old cassettes before they snap." Guess what happened while digitizing this tape? This is a recording off of WRTI in Philly (aka "Jazz FM," at the time). Back when I was making beats, I heard a song come on the radio that I wanted to sample a bit off, so I hit record and just let the tape roll. This is that tape. A few years later, a much more talented producer and emcee heard my track and wanted to...

This tape appears to be a late-90s conference call recorded and released as an advertisement for Tristar's "Intrasound" naturopathic healing technology. Intrasound gel and powder are discussed. Intrasound products appear to still be around, though there's not a heck of lot on the web about them. I'm guessing this was from the late 1990s, as the web site advertised on the cassette was gone by '99.
